Transforming Your Space: Why wall colours change from one space to the next and how to get closer to the colour you want!

Have you ever walked into a friend’s house, admired their beautifully painted walls, and decided to recreate that exact look in your own space? You rush to the store, pick up the same paint colour, and eagerly apply it to your living room—only to be met with disappointment. The colour you loved now looks dull, or worse, completely different. What happened?

In today’s blog, we’ll explore the factors that can alter how paint colours appear in your home and share some tips to achieve the colour expression you want.

Why Does Colour Change?

Lighting Conditions, like natural daylight varies throughout the day, and the type of artificial light you use can drastically change how a colour looks. The same wall colour can look entirely different under these varying light sources.

Tips to Light Your Interior Spaces Like a Pro

  1. Choose the Right Lighting

Experiment with different light sources. Consider using lights that allow you to adjust the colour temperature. Light sources are divided into three main colour temperatures – Warm white, Neutral soft white and cool white.  Warmer white lights can bring out the richness in greys, ideal for bedrooms or any space that requires an intimate setting. Neutral soft white, are most pleasing in the kitchens, bathrooms or general work spaces. While cooler lights blend better with the natural daylight source and will ad coolness and brighten colours.

  1. Layer Your Lighting

Combine general lighting, focused lighting, and accent lighting (highlighting specific areas) to create a balanced atmosphere that complements your wall colour and the mood you want to set in the room.

  1. Embrace Adaptable Colours

For our demonstration, we used Marley M11 Ultra Multi-surface Paint in Misty Grey and Slate. These pure greys (a blend of black and white pigment) are incredibly adaptable and can change in appearance based on your lighting choices.
